Day one

Our morning started with being picked up at our hotel at 4:30 am. Yes! 4:30 am !!

We picked up our fellow hikers the kids ( a computer tech couple, 27 years old) from Seattle and the Texas family of four. The parents are mid fifties and the daughter and her hubby like 30 years old.

We drove for 2 hours to our breakfast spot, which was delicious!

Breakfast spot

Back in the van for an hour for the start of the Salkanty Trek. Other groups were there and the first sights looked a little daunting but nothing like it really was. Starting out with the sharp incline kicked my ass! I couldn’t catch my breath and struggled. The hike was four miles to our first camp, called the sky camp. I hate to say it but I knew I was in trouble with my breathing at this point. I’m guessing but I think we were up to 13,000 or so feet at this point.

The start of our trek

We rested, ate lunch and then rode horses to Humanty Lake. So beautiful. We hiked down which was doable for me. We came down, had about 15 minutes before we had to meet for snack and then dinner.

We were exhausted and I went to bed at like 8pm, or I should say tried to. I drank so much water and cocoa tea during the day and I had to go to the bathroom a million times which was outside of our dome. It was close but we had to get dressed and grab flashlights. Then back in the sleeping bag with liner. The packing was challenging because it was so dark. The electricity goes out at 8 and we had to be at breakfast and packed up at 5:30. The night sky was amazing! I’m having problems getting David’s picture and will add later.
